Challenge

There is considerable scientific evidence that our climate is changing and that it will continue to change at an increasing rate. This will have consequences such as more frequent and more extreme weather events including heatwaves, storms, floods and bushfires, changes to rainfall patterns, and sea level rise.

Governments and businesses must plan and take action now to prepare for these impacts. This includes changing the way buildings and infrastructure are designed [and operated], diversifying water management in our cities, preparing for extreme weather, improving our resource use and rethinking the way we develop vulnerable coastal areas.

Approach

Climate Change Risk Assessment and Adaptation Planning is a process by which an organisation, company or institution assesses current relevant projections on climate change, completes a risk assessment based on those projections and perceived self-impact, and designs a plan that will assist them to adapt and build resilience to the identified risks and impacts.

SLR Consulting acknowledges that climate change impact forecasting is still in its infancy and new information is published every day. In the face of this uncertainty we promote and recommend adaptation planning that is flexible. Through close consultation and facilitated planning, adaptation pathways can be developed which detail low-regrets and no-regrets actions.

This approach is based on the methodology used to develop the Decision Support for Coastal Adaptation (Hunter and Central Coast Regional Council Environmental Management Strategy), and is quickly being considered as industry best-practice.
